Savannah Red’s debut album “Paper Doll” is a genre-bending exploration of the modern woman. Her toolbag includes an exploration in jazz, swing, and blues with her own quiet flair - think 90’s indie darling backed by a brassy quintet. The title track, “Paper Doll” is a feminista tongue-in-cheek swing number detailing the strength and fragility in being a woman. On “Between Dreams,” the pianist creates a lush soundscape behind Red’s bell-clear vocals of a love song, equal parts Norah Jones and Mazzy Star. From flirty & breezy bossa “Olive Juice,” to foot-stomping and rebellious “Sweet Virginia,” to brooding “Howlin’,” Red showcases her stylistic range and a voice as light, smooth, and rich as panna cotta.
